This Zia necklace is made from an etched New Mexico State Quarter, featuring a zia over New Mexico on the reverse side.

The Zia Sun Symbol is most commonly recognized as a symbol for New Mexico, but originated with the ancient Indians of the Zia Pueblo. The Zia represents the basic harmony of the universe, with four points radiating from a circle of life and love, without beginning or end. To the Zia Indians four is a sacred number. This number can be seen in the Earth with four cardinal directions and the four seasons, and in the day, with sunrise, noon, evening and night. Our lives are divided by the four stages of childhood, youth, adulthood, and old age. These Native Americans believe that man has four sacred obligations which are to develop a strong body, a clear mind, a pure spirit, and a devotion to the welfare of his people.
